Huawei P9 – Hands on impression of the new “camera” phone

Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer and the world’s 3rd largest smartphone manufacturer has announced their latest flagship device Huawei P9 for the Indian market. P9 will be the first device to be manufactured in collaboration between Huawei and Leica, one of the pioneers in cameras and optics.

Huawei P9

Huawei P9 is made of aerospace-class aluminum, with diamond-cut edges and covered by 2.5D glass on both sides. The device has a thin body of only 6.95mm thickness packing in a 3000mAh battery as well. On the front we have a 5.2″ FHD IPS LCD screen with 96% color saturation and 500 nits brightness. On the right side we have power/lock keys and volume rocker whereas on the left side there is a hybrid sim slot that takes 2 nano-sim cards or a nano-sim and microSD card for additional storage. At the top we have a noise cancelling microphone and bottom of the device features a Type-C port, 3.5mm audio jack, primary microphone and loudspeaker grill. The device gives a premium feel when holding in the hands with it’s metal build and glass finish making it one of the most beautiful phones in the market today.

We have a 12MP dual lens camera setup at the back of Huawei P9 which has been co-engineered with Leica. There is a RGB camera which primarily captures color, while the monochrome camera is used for capturing the picture details. Both the rear cameras work in tandem to create images of superior detail, depth and color. The Huawei P9 also excels in low-light conditions, as the dual-camera design captures more light and detail capture. We had some time with the device at launch event and were really impressed with the camera. You can check the full camera review of Huawei P9 from tech.ink for more details. Some of their sample pictures have been posted below as well.

Internally, the Huawei P9 runs on company’s latest Kirin 955 Chipset which is an Octa-core processor consisting of 4 x 2.5 GHz Cortex-A72 & 4 x 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. The variant launched in India comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory that can be expanded up to 256GB using microSD card. On the front we have a 8MP selfie camera with various beauty modes and filters that can be used to enhance the pictures. There is a fast fingerprint scanner at the back for various tasks like unlocking, selfies, silence alarms, attend phone calls etc. The performance and all other features will be explained in our full review of the device.

The device is currently available on Flipkart for a price of INR 39,999. Here is our short hands-on video showing you the build and UI of Huawei P9.
