Asus has been launching laptops in pretty much every segment and every budget to keep itself on top compared to other competitors. Today, we have the Zenbook Flip for review which comes with Ryzen processor and is also a convertible that can go into tablet mode.
Build and Display of Zenbook Flip:
The Zenbook Flip has a silver-colored finish, with ASUS going for an aluminum top and a plastic bottom. The entire system is well built and feels premium & sturdy, as is the 360° hinge that keeps the display in a good position either laptop mode or tablet mode.
Zenbook Flip UM462 does not come with an integrated fingerprint scanner or a Numpad within the trackpad like the other models in Asus lineup.
On the right side, we get the power key, audio jack, USB 2.0 and a microSD card reader whereas the left side houses the DC input, HDMI port, USB 3.1 Type-A and USB 3.1 Type-C ports. The laptop comes equipped with dual-band 802.11ac to provide better wireless connectivity as well.
Zenbook Flip comes with a 14 inch 1080p IPS LCD display which produces good colors and has great viewing angles too. The bezels are thin giving the Zenbook Flip a 90% screen-to-body ratio. The brightness levels are ok but not as good as some of the other laptops in the same segment. This makes using the laptop in sunlight a little unpleasant, especially with the glossy screen. Overall, the screen is good just like other Asus models in the market.
The keyboard on Zenbook Flip is easy to type on with a relatively smaller stroke but has backlighting which makes it easier to see the keys at night or in a dark room as well. Ergo Lift hinge technology makes for a slightly more comfortable typing position than if the keyboard deck was lying flat.
Performance & battery life:
The laptop comes with a Ryzen 7 3700U processor that also has an integrated Radeon RX Vega 10 GPU to care of gaming and other intensive tasks. There is an 8GB RAM for multitasking and 512GB SSD for storage which has good read/write speeds.
The processor has a clock speed of 2.3GHz which gets boosted up to 4GHz when required. The performance is similar to Intel’s Core i5-8250U processor but the integrated Radeon RX Vega 10 GPU outperforms UHD Graphics 620 which Intel integrates with its processor. We were able to play most of the titles on Zenbook Flip at least with medium settings and few games at high settings.
Asus has provided the Zenbook Flip with a 42 Wh battery which is 15 Wh lesser than the UX461UA model. The laptop lasts around 6.5-7.5 hours before it needs recharging and this is again depending on the usage which is different with every user.
Conclusion:
The Asus Zenbook Flip (UM462) is a great convertible laptop that is powerful enough for young professionals or students. The integrated Radeon RX Vega 10 GPU provides a boost compared to other laptops in the segment allowing for gaming as well. The battery life and display are all good and this laptop should be an automatic choice in the segment for anyone looking to buy a convertible that can act as a tablet as well.
